Do you want to increase your traffic from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, but don’t have a strong budget to dedicate to search engine optimization? If so, then you will be pleased to know that there are things you can do to boost your search visibility. All you will need is time to invest in the process. In this article, you will find five ways to get organic search traffic.

Make sure your website is optimized.

The foundation of SEO is a website that is properly optimized for the best keywords for your business. Your homepage, the main pages about your products and services, and your blog content should be optimized for search.

Start by making sure that you have one main keyword phrase in your SEO title, meta description, an image filename and ALT tag, and mentioned a few times throughout the page content. If you do not know what keyword phrases to use, you can try the Google AdWords Keyword Tool to find keyword phrases with great search volume, or use Google Webmaster Tools to find keyword phrases your visitors are using to reach your website, but that you are not optimizing for just yet.

Create strong social media profiles.

One way to get more visibility in search is to have more pages in search about your business. Social media networks have some of the highest domain authority. Therefore, they make great online presences for your business.

You do not need to sign up for every social network out there, considering that there are hundreds. You do, however, need to sign up for the main ones – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google+. You also need to sign up for the main ones for your industry. For realtors, you have ActiveRain. For photographers, you have 500px. For designers, you have Behance.

Knowem.com/websites all offers a complete list of all of the social networks and bookmarking sites out there.

As you grow your number of social media profiles, you will increase visibility in search for your website. While the links will not count for SEO value, they will help you drive more referral traffic to your business.

Get local directory links.

Another great source of high authority presences to build for your website are local directories. If your business has a physical location, you can create local directory profiles and listings for your business to build links back to your website and help increase the overall visibility of your business in search. This works for any business, whether you offer local services or international services. All you need is an address that you do not mind being made public.

To get started, do a Google search for your business name or phone number. There’s a good chance that if you have published your address online, you have a local directory listing or two already out there, waiting to be claimed. Google your competitor’s business names and phone numbers too – you might find they have listings on local directories that you do not.

Contribute to online publications in your industry.

If you follow SEO news, you know that Matt Cutts spoke out on guest blogging for SEO as something you should not do. This does not mean you should avoid guest blogging altogether – like any other SEO strategy, you should focus on the quality over the quantity. So instead of trying to write for any blog with a PR5 or higher, you should aim to write for the online publications in your industry that are most respected and attract readers from your ideal customer base.

Those that submit quality content to quality publications should not have to worry about incurring the wrath of Google. The goal is not to only build links to your website, although that is a direct benefit. The goal is to introduce yourself and your business in front of new and larger audiences in order to build authority in your industry.

Create partnerships with complementary businesses.

Have you noticed partner pages on other business websites in your industry? If you have, you might want to look into ways to partner with those businesses to get links from them. Typically, these will be complimentary business types.

For example, a wedding photographer may have a list of other wedding vendors that brides can contact for planners, cakes, flowers, venues, and more. Or if you have wholesale products, you may want to see if your vendors would be willing to link to your main website in exchange for a listing on your website as a top vendor.

BONUS: Do not buy cheap link building or SEO services.

When you are working with a limited budget, you might think the best solution is to buy cheap link building or SEO services.

The issue with this approach is that while you might see a boost in your search engine visibility, resulting in more organic search traffic, you put yourself in the position of getting penalized by search engines like Google down the road.

Before you resort to cheap link building or SEO services, run through the five tips above for optimizing your website, creating active social profiles, getting local directory listings, contributing to quality online publications, and partnering with other businesses.
